Healthy Valleys highlights isolation and loneliness

Jim is a retired plumber who lives in Kirkfieldbank. He was a keen gardener, enjoyed watching sport and playing bowls. Since his wife died over a year ago, Jim has lost interest in life and rarely leaves his home. Jim has few friends or family and weeks can pass without him seeing anyone.

There are hundreds of lonely, isolated people like Jim, living in Clydesdale. Older people in particular are most at risk of loneliness and isolation.

  • 15, 900 over 65’s live in Clydesdale, this is expected to rise by 24% by 2020
  • 55% of older people have a long term health illness
  • 1/3 live on their own (Source: South Lanarkshire Council)

ReConnect is a Healthy Valleys project, funded by the Big Lottery until the end of 2018 and delivered in partnership with Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust.

Developed in conjunction with older people, ReConnect aims to tackle the growing problem of social isolation by offering support and help to older Clydesdale residents who need help to link them back into their local community.

Promoting a form of early intervention and preventative approaches which draw on recognised national and international best practice, ReConnect works collaboratively with older people to identify their own strengths and challenges.

Trained ReConnect volunteers  then provide support and encouragement to empower changes in behaviour that increase the confidence and independence of our older people, helping them to reach their goals and enjoy a fuller life again.

Do you think you could help older people in Clydesdale, someone like Jim? Simply taking Jim to a game of bowls once a week would really bring a smile to his face.
